Debby causes major flooding in Rocky Mount

Debby's storm conditions cause severe flooding to roadways and parks in Rocky Mount.

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. (WITN) – It’s hard to tell what’s a river and what’s a road in Rocky Mount.

After Tropical Storm Debby made its way through eastern North Carolina Thursday, Rocky Mount has seen excessive flooding spill onto its streets, especially on roads and parks that sit along the Tar River.

But residents say this happens every time there’s a storm, and it makes troublesome traffic.

“I have to go to work today, and I have to get around, but with the tunnel flooded, if there’s a train there, I have to wait for it,” said resident Adam Torres.

Riverside Drive is one of the main roads impacted by the heavy rains on Thursday. Residents say there’s a manhole in the roadway that sits between stormwater drains, which often causes sewage spills when it rains.

According to Sound Rivers, these sewage spills have caused over four million gallons of sewage to spill into the Tar River over time. People in town say they’re ready for the flood waters to wash away.

“It’s kind of in the way because all week it’s been raining, so this is my first opportunity to have a little bit of dryness and take my dog for a walk,” said resident Jasmine Sanders.

According to the National Weather Service, the Tar River in Rocky Mount is forecast to fall over the weekend, and residents here hope that will mean the flood waters will recede.
