Controlled burn in Craven Co. for parts of Croatan National Forest today

CRAVEN COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – The U.S. Forest Service says a controlled burn is planned for parts of the Croatan National Forest in Craven County Friday.

The Forest Service says a helicopter will start a prescribed burn on about 1,112 acres of the Croatan Forest near Sunset Drive and Greenfield Heights Boulevard in the City of Havelock today.

Prescribed fires, also known as controlled burns, reduce potential wildfire fuels that have built up on the forest floor and improve forest health by supporting native, fire-adapted species, according to the Forest Service.

Officials say drones are not allowed in the area during the burning, and they will watch wind speed and direction in order to limit smoke impacts on nearby communities.
