Cold blast coming this weekend; Single digit wind chills

Overnight lows will drop into the teens this weekend

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – Two shots of arctic chill will impact Eastern NC over the coming days. The first round will be a quick hit from sunrise Wednesday through mid morning Thursday. Sunrise temps both days will bottom out in the mid 20s. Afternoon highs on Wednesday will likely be stuck in the 30s with a warmup Thursday afternoon to the low 50s.

The second round, arriving this weekend will be intense enough to plummet temperatures to values we have not seen in Eastern NC in over a year. As a result of the potentially frigid temperatures this weekend, the WITN First Alert Weather Team has designated a First Alert Weather Day for late Friday night through Sunday morning.

Air temperatures will be dropping well below normal over the next several nights. The combination of clear skies, brisk northwesterly winds and an arctic airmass; will create atmospheric conditions for frigid wind chills during the day and into the evening hours.

Overnight lows will drop into the teens and lower 20s, Friday night through sunrise Sunday, creating hazards for those with poor insulation or exposed pipes. Animals need to be taken care of as this type of chill can be extremely dangerous to our outdoor pets. Highs on both Saturday and Sunday will stay well below normal, maxing out in the mid to upper 30s both days. Winds near 10 mph early Sunday morning will likely produce wind chills in the single digits to start the day.
