Class in Onslow County crowned “National Champions of Reading”

ONSLOW COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – One middle school class here in the east is turning heads after adding “national champions” to their resume.

Read with Malcolm, a youth literacy initiative of author and former NFL star Malcolm Mitchell, has awarded Devyn McGowan’s 7th Grade Class at Jacksonville Commons Middle School with the 2024 READBowl National Championship. This award makes them the top middle school reading team in the United States.

The team, which is named Core 7, read for a combined 186,530 minutes during the four-week competition to take home the prize.

This year, more than 280,000 students in 14 countries competed in READBowl, including more than 40,000 in North Carolina.

“I could not be more proud of the McGowan Core 7 Team and also the state of North Carolina,” said Mitchell. “North Carolina was our top state for participation this year.“

The next challenge is READMadness, a poetry bracket competition, designed like the NCAA tournament.
