City of Greenville’s 250th anniversary celebrated at special Yard Gnomes baseball game

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) -2024 has been a special year so far for the city of Greenville as they celebrate their 250th anniversary, but it’s also been a year of firsts with the addition of the Yard Gnomes baseball team.

Greenville’s history is already rich and the Yard Gnomes are now part of that forever.

Fans held their free souvenir wooden bats dedicated to Greenville’s 250th anniversary with pride at Guy Smith Stadium Wednesday night, as the Yard Gnomes were once again back in action against the Tri-City Chili Peppers, but this game meant a little more for the city.

“I can think of no better way to celebrate our 250th anniversary than to have our first season with our baseball team,” said Marion Blackburn, Greenville Councilwoman. “We really are a community and when you come to the games, you start to recognize people who love this team.”

It’s been 250 years since the city of Greenville was founded and this year, people are making sure to recognize the great work done throughout the years by city leaders including Blackburn.

Like many others, Blackburn has grown to love the Yard Gnomes as they continue their inaugural season. She believes the team is part of the 250 years of history.

“We’re seeing more and more people come here to stay,” Blackburn said. “Having a team like the Yard Gnomes with their enthusiasm, good play, and that great name is hard not to like.”

The city of Greenville will have more celebrations throughout the remainder of the year as their anniversary continues.
