Child killed after being hit by a car on South Memorial Drive in Greenville

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) -Greenville police are investigating after a child was hit and killed by a car Thursday evening.

It happened around 7:30 on South Memorial Drive between 5th Street and 3rd Street.

The 9-year-old boy was taken to ECU Health Medical Center where police say he died from his injuries.

The driver of the vehicle remained on scene and is fully cooperating, which Greenville police chief Ted Sauls says is a good thing considering the circumstances.

“You often get the question of did the driver stay or leave,” Sauls said. ‘In this case it just appears to be an extremely unfortunate incident all around.”

Sauls continued by saying, “Sad to be talking too you,” he said. “I’m sad to be standing here and giving the information.”

Memorial Drive, between 5th Street and 3rd Street was closed much of the night but reopened around 10:15.
