CASHING OUT: Counterfeit money operation busted in Kinston hotel room

KINSTON, N.C. (WITN) – Two men are in jail accused of running a counterfeiting money operation out of an Eastern Carolina hotel room.

Kinston police say they found counterfeit money, printers, and dyeing equipment in a room at the Holiday Inn Express on Hill Farm Road around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Police were tipped off by the hotel about tenants who were making the counterfeit cash.

Two suspects were arrested shortly after police showed up. Mark Ellis, 28, of Rock Hill, South Carolina, and Shyheed Harper, 27, of Charlotte were charged with forgery of instrument, possession of five or more forged instruments, and conspiracy to commit a felony.

Police considered this a small operation with the capability of producing a large amount of counterfeit money.
