Carteret County Sheriff’s Office warns of concealed carry permit scam

CARTERET COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) -Scammers have been targeting residents through messages with a link, according to the Carteret County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff Asa Buck warns Carteret County residents to be aware of scams that target Concealed Carry Permit holders and non-permit holders.

Scammers send text messages claiming your Concealed Carry permit has expired and needs to be changed or picked up at the Sheriff’s office.

Messages will include a link to a website for payment.

If you receive a text or email about your Concealed Carry Permit:

  • Disregard the message.
  • Do not click any links.
  • Do not make any payments.

The Carteret County Sheriff’s Office says they will never request Concealed Carry Permit renewals or applications through text messages.
