Carteret County Schools expected to come up with new school calendar next week

CARTERET COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – An Eastern Carolina school board is expected to come up with a new school calendar after a judge said their current calendar violated state law.

The Carteret County School Board will meet this coming Thursday in a special meeting.

On Wednesday, a judge ruled in favor of a lawsuit filed by a group of residents who wanted the school calendar tossed out.

The issue was the starting date for classes. A state law says public schools cannot start before August 26th while Carteret County set their start date for August 13th.

The school system said it changed the start date to align its calendars with the community college and to balance the instructional calendar, and allow students to take exams before the winter break.

A public notice for the special meeting said the school board would first meet in closed session with their attorney and then in open session consider adopting a revised school calendar.
