Cape Hatteras activates temporary beacon for restoration project

MANTEO, N.C. (WITN) – A temporary beacon will be set up for the restoration of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse.

The Cape Hatteras National Seashore announced that next week, the U.S. Coast Guard plans to dissemble and remove the current fixture, which had been set up for the last 52 years, and replace it. This replaced replica beacon will be a rotating Fresnel lens and LED light source.

A temporary beacon will be set up this evening. The National Seashore says that beacon will be visible for 18 miles and flash every 7.5 seconds.
