Camp Lejeune confirms Marine was killed in parachute accident last week

CARTERET COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – Camp Lejeune now says a Marine who died last week was in a parachute mishap.

Sgt. Colin Arslanbas died late Thursday night in Carteret County.

The Marine was part of the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit’s Composite Unit Training Exercise.

The Naval Safety Command says a fatal parachute mishap occurred at Marine Corps Outlying Landing Field Atlantic, which is in Carteret County. Arslanbas apparently died at the scene.

II Marine Expeditionary Force confirms to WITN that the Missouri native died in a parachute accident.

Arslanbas had been promoted to sergeant just two weeks before his death, according to the Marine Corps. He was a reconnaissance Marine assigned to the Maritime Special Purpose Force, 24th MEU.

Marines say the training accident remains under investigation.
