Box truck driver charged in death of J.H. Rose student

WINTERVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – A driver has been charged in a crash 12 days ago that killed a high school student.

Winterville police say Enrique Almonte, of Wilmington, was charged with death by motor vehicle and failure to reduce speed, both misdemeanors.

Killed in the May 8th crash on Winterville Parkway was 15-year-old Caroline Lupton, of Winterville. She was a ninth grader at J.H. Rose High School.

Police said the charges were made after consulting with the Pitt County District Attorney’s Office.

Before attending J.H. Rose, Lupton graduated from Winterville Charter Academy where her mother teaches.

A fundraiser has been established to build a serenity garden at the charter school in memory of the teen.

“This garden will be a place of remembrance and growth just as her legacy will grow forever,” said the post on GoFundMe.
