WILSON COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – A search and rescue team says it has recovered a body inside a house that collapsed on itself this morning.
Wilson County confirmed for WITN that a man in his 60′s has died after his house collapsed on him during a strong storm system that passed by earlier this morning.
Urban Search and Rescue found the man after neighbors said a man who lives there was missing, while his only vehicle was parked in the back of the damaged home. They also said he was not answering his cell phone.
The house is on Lloyd Road outside of Lucama.
A tornado damaged several homes, a school, and a church in Wilson County.
The same storm heavily damaged Springfield Middle School & Friendship Primitive Baptist Church as well as three other homes confirmed with damage.
School Superintendent Dr. Lane Mills says the worst damage was to the 6th and 7th grade halls where sections of the roof and walls are missing. He said fortunately no students or staff were inside the building.
Officials say there are multiple trees and power lines down from the storm and are asking people to avoid the area.
A tornado warning was issued for the area just before 3 a.m. and continued until 3:45 a.m. The path of the warning took the storm right through the location of the school. WITN has a crew on the ground surveying the damage.
