Boaters last seen in Oregon Inlet found safe off Delaware coast

OREGON INLET, N.C. (WITN) – Two boaters who had been missing for the past 10 days were found this afternoon off the coast of Delaware.

The U.S. Coast Guard says the Silver Muna, a tanker, located Kevin Hyde, and Joe Ditomasso. The two men were last in contact with family and friends on December 3rd when they left Oregon Inlet.

They were aboard a sailboat, the Atrevida II, which was going from Cape May, New Jersey to Marathon, Florida.

The men’s sailboat was found 214 miles east of Delaware without fuel and power, making their radios and navigation equipment inoperable. Hyde and Ditomasso got the attention of the tanker by waving their arms and a flag.

The Coast Guard says the men and their pet dog were brought aboard the tanker and were checked out by medical staff onboard. The two will stay on the tanker until it reaches its next port of New York.

Some 21,164 square miles of water were searched by the Coast Guard, Navy, and other partners for the missing boat.
