CHERRY POINT, N.C. (WITN) – President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden are now in Eastern Carolina.
The Bidens are at Cherry Point with Marines and their families to participate in a Friendsgiving dinner, according to the White House.
The president was joined on Air Force One by Gov. Roy Cooper and First Lady Kristin Cooper. The governor earlier attended the pardoning of two North Carolina turkeys at the White House by the president.
The visit is part of the first lady’s initiative to support military families known as “Joining Forces.” Marines from Cherry Point, Camp Lejeune, and New River are expected to attend the dinner.
Last year, the Bidens visited troops at Fort Bragg.
The meal is hosted by the Robert Irvine Foundation. The president and first lady will help serve part of the meal, according to the White House.
Biden was last in North Carolina in April when he visited North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro.
This will be Biden’s first visit to our area as president. As a senator in 2008, he campaigned at East Carolina University as Barack Obama’s running mate. In 2009, as vice president, Biden visited Duplin County.
Marines in attendance spoke about what the president’s visit meant to them.
“It’s noticed. The Marines and I definitely notice it and it definitely boosts morale. And it shows us that they’re taking time out of their day too. They have families, they have loved ones as well, but they’re putting us at the forefront of their minds and we really appreciate it,” Staff Sergeant Arturo Marquez said.
