Bertie vs. Washington County High School championship game closed to parents and fans

PLYMOUTH, N.C. (WITN) – In a rare move, the bleachers were empty at the match-up between Bertie and Washington County High Schools on Friday night.

The Washington County Panthers could be seen leaving the campus to play against the Bertie County Falcons in the Four Rivers Conference Championship basketball game at 5:00 pm.

According to Washington County Schools, no spectators were allowed in the gym the Panthers took on the Falcons at Tarboro High School – a neutral site.

Public Information Officer Terri Gallop says the decision to hold a private event was mutual between the two schools.

“Both schools have agreed that it would be for safety precautions that no spectators or parents attend tonight’s game between Washington County High School and Bertie High School and the game will be played in Tarboro. So once again, no spectators and no parents” says Gallop.

This was the third time the teams have met this season, with each school winning one during the regular season.

Bertie County won the game 54-48 to take the conference championship, both teams will now move on to the first round of the NCHSAA state playoffs..
