Belhaven Mayor: Offer made to hire new police chief

BELHAVEN, N.C. (WITN) -The future of police protection in Belhaven was the focus of a special meeting Monday night.

Belhaven Police Chief Chris Kelly announced his resignation back in February, not even a full year into the role, ultimately adding to the staffing issues.

The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office has been helping with patrols.

This weekend the town sent out a survey asking residents how important it is to have police protection, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. That led some to believe that the town would be doing away with the police force.

Mayor Ricky Credle says that is not the case. “I mean you know, people have their own speculations about what’s going on. I can say we’ve extended an offer to a candidate and will be making an announcement soon.”

Credle says an offer has been made to fill the vacant police chief position but says they don’t have a timeline for when an announcement will be made.
