Beaufort County inmate pleads guilty in death of another inmate

BEAUFORT COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – A Beaufort County inmate has pleaded guilty to charges related to the death of another inmate in the Beaufort County Jail.

Deputies say that 31-year-old Quintin Freeman of Greenville died on April 29th, 2022 while he was in custody at the Beaufort County Jail. Freeman was being held on felony charges from Beaufort, Pitt, and Wilson counties at the time of his death.

On October 9th of last year, 24-year-old Ashun Anthony of Washington was indicted by a Beaufort County Grand Jury on charges of death by distribution in Freeman’s death. Anthony was already in custody at the Beaufort County Jail on drug charges that are not related to Freeman’s death and was ordered held on an additional $150,000 secured bond.

Anthony pled guilty to the charges on February 6th and was sentenced to between six and eight years in prison as well as pay restitution to Freeman’s family to cover his funeral expenses.
