Beaufort Co. Schools refuses to release details on Washington H.S. vandalism

WASHINGTON, N.C. (WITN) – Details on a senior prank that apparently caused significant damage to a high school cafeteria are being withheld by an Eastern Carolina school district.

WITN has been sent pictures of reported damage done Wednesday night to the cafeteria at Washington High School.

The photos show the cafeteria a complete mess with tables overturned, and toilet paper strewn about while the lunchroom was roped off with red caution tape.

Beaufort County Schools called the vandalism an incident.  “We can confirm there was an incident at WHS however it is still being investigated. We have no further comments at this time,” said a school district spokeswoman.

The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office and Washington Police Department say they have not been contacted to investigate.

At least one parent of a senior said their son would not be able to participate in graduation ceremonies because he was in the school at the time.

WITN also asked the school system for any photographs of the damage, which under North Carolina law should be considered public records.  Our request to the school district spokeswoman has gone unanswered.
