There are 25 locations where you can donate

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – The Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina is on a mission to stop summer hunger with an initiative called ‘Backpack Buddies.’

More than 300,000 kids in the east rely on school-provided meals but as summer slowly approaches, some children and families will struggle to access food. The food bank is hoping to change that with donations.

At school, students can get two meals a day, but during the summer, Regional Development Director Whykeshia White said nutritious food may not be available, and something needs to be done.

“This is a way for us to help be a good steward of our community and to give back but to also have our community members be involved to help supply items to those kids in need,” White said.

Until May 31st, the community can donate items like canned beans, fruit snacks, and water bottles at 25 locations, including the Greenville-Pitt County Chamber of Commerce.

Marketing and Communications Director Lauren Phillips said they partnered with the food bank to make a difference in their community.

“We’re just trying to relieve a little bit of stress before they go home for the summer,” Phillips said.

During the pandemic, White said food pantries saw a 60 percent increase in demand and it still has not slowed down.

“Our partner agencies are seeing more people coming to their doors that are in need,” White said.

However, with a little help, that could change, giving children better opportunities.

“We want kids to be able to enjoy their summer without the worry of how are they gonna get their next meal,” Phillips said.
