Ayden woman charged with killing fiancé last year in Snow Hill

SNOW HILL, N.C. (WITN) – An autopsy says a murder victim was shot a half dozen times in his back last year and now his fiancé is in jail, accused of the murder.

Snow Hill police say Tameka Best was arrested Tuesday in Pitt County.

The 39-year-old Best was charged with second-degree murder.

James Schultheis III was found shot near the couple’s Jordan Avenue apartment on April 23, 2023.

An autopsy obtained by WITN, says the man was shot six times in the back. It says Schultheis appeared to be walking to his car and the shooter came up from behind him and opened fire.

Chief Joshua Smith says witness statements led to Best’s arrest at her current boyfriend’s home.

She is now in the Greene County jail on a $500,000 secured bond. Her first court appearance is this Friday.
