LENOIR COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – New information about how a three-year-old boy shot and killed himself earlier this year has been made public.
WITN this morning obtained the autopsy of Clarence Byrd IV.
Deputies say the toddler shot himself on January 14th at the family home on Murphy Road outside of Pink Hill.
The autopsy says the boy’s father, Clarence Byrd III, had left a loaded gun on the dresser while taking a shower. The child picked up the .38 caliber revolver and shot himself near his left eye.
Several days after the shooting, the father was charged by deputies with involuntary manslaughter and negligent child abuse.
