Authorities investigating Highway 12 fatal crash on Ocracoke Island

OCRACOKE ISLAND, N.C. (WITN) – Hyde County deputies are investigating a fatal accident that happened late this morning on Ocracoke Island.

County officials confirmed that the crash on Highway 12 killed a person, but had no other details.

The accident happened north of the overwash that shut down the highway this morning.

The road is closed between the Pony Pens and the ferry terminal due to sand and overwash. The DOT says that section of Highway 12 isn’t expected to reopen until Thursday evening.

Originally, The Highway Patrol said they were investigating the crash, but troopers are unable to access the island because the ferry service is shut down.
