Authorities investigating after wastewater spill at Camp Lejeune

Officials say the break in the water main was repaired at 2:15 am.

CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. (WITN) -Authorities say a sewer line broke resulting in a wastewater spill at Camp Lejeune on Saturday.

According to Camp Lejuene, at 6:40 pm, the public works division was notified of a forcemain break along Brewster Boulevard near the Stone Street intersection.

They say during repairs, the flow from a lift station along this line was diverted to an open ditch to prevent the release to surface waters.

Early this morning, the wastewater flow volumes exceeded the capacity of the tt99 wet well and surrounding containment which led to a breach of approximately 54,000 gallons into the new river.

Authorities say vacuum trucks were used to recover and remove the excess wastewater and lime was applied to the affected area and the break in the water main was repaired at 2:15 am.

Officials say surface water samples at the spill site will be taken by the base in coordination with the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality.
