Greene County, N.C. (WITN) – A National Weather Service survey found at least EF-2 damage in Greene County after a tornado-warned storm moved through early Thursday morning. Winds within the tornado reached an estimated 125 as it caused damage for almost 10 miles. At its widest point, the tornado grew to 400 yards wide.
The tornado started near the intersection of Highway 903 and Hull Road in Snow Hill. Minor tree damage was found along with significant damage to a wooden billboard. WITN Chief Meteorologist Zach Holder noticed debris being lofted into the air on radar as it exited Snow Hill.
The tornado stayed with NC Highway 58 for its entire life crossing the highway twice. At least EF-2 damage was found just south of Highway 58 and Fort Run Road, where a double-wide mobile home and a barn were destroyed. A medium-sized pick-up was moved or rolled 50 to 75 feet. Debris from the mobile home was blown at least 100 yards downwind into a field. The tornado crossed Fort Run Road with additional damage at Fort Run Road and Corbett Town Road. Significant damage to farm buildings occurred after the tornado crossed Griffin Road.
The tornado continued northwest across Apple Tree Road where significant damage was found to the Greene/Wayne County line, but it’s unclear whether or not the tornado lifted or continued into Wayne and Wilson counties. Additional surveying will be needed to determine the final path length and rating.
