Armed standoff over, U.S. 17 reopens in Craven County

CRAVEN COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – An armed standoff that shut down a major Eastern Carolina highway is over.

Craven County deputies shut down U.S. 17 north of Vanceboro for a large part of the day. Traffic began flowing again around 4:45 p.m.

Major David McFadyen said deputies were negotiating with a barricaded person who was armed.

McFadyen says no one was being held hostage and no injuries had been reported so far.

Around 4:00 p.m. it appeared that deputies were standing down. An armored vehicle left and then an ambulance departed, along with many of the law enforcement officers at the standoff.

Deputies have yet to release any details on the condition of the armed person, nor what started the standoff.
