Armed standoff closes U.S. 17 in Craven County

CRAVEN COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – A major Eastern Carolina highway is shut down due to an armed standoff.

Craven County deputies say U.S. 17 north of Vanceboro is closed to all traffic.

Major David McFadyen says deputies are negotiating with a barricaded person who is armed.

McFadyen says no one is being held hostage and no injuries have been reported so far.

Deputies have the area surrounded with law enforcement officers in tactical gear at the scene.

Northbound traffic on U.S. 17 is being detoured at Irene Road, while southbound is closed at the Beaufort County line.
