Applications open for NC Patriot Star Family Recovery Scholarship

RALEIGH, N.C. (WITN) – A scholarship application has reopened providing students in military or veteran families the opportunity to earn thousands of dollars toward higher education.

The NC Patriot Star Family Recovery Scholarship has reopened.

Officials say it provides up to $6,500 per semester to help military and veteran families and disabled veterans afford higher education.

The scholarship has helped almost 300 people across 45 colleges and universities since it started in 2022, according to officials. The funds from the scholarship are available through 2026 or when they are spent.

Qualifications for the scholarship are:

  • Child or spouse of a fallen service member or disabled veteran, children of injured active-duty service members, or a disabled veteran with a VA disability rating of at least 50%.
  • North Carolina residents accepted to or currently attending in-state post-secondary institutions.
  • Household income is less than 350% of the federal poverty level.

According to the Patriot Foundation, an economic stimulus bill passed by Congress in 2021 provides an allocation of $13 million from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA).
