Annual state-funding program opens for bike and walk path proposals

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – The application period for cities and towns to apply for funds to create or improve cycling and walking paths has officially opened.

The Department of Transportation’s 2024 Multimodal Planning Grant Program uses state money for biking and walking paths as well as possible transit connections. This is the 21st time the funds have been made available.

According to NCDOT, cities and towns that have less than 100,000 residents, and have an existing bicycle or pedestrian plan that is at least five years old are looking at updating their plan, as well as those with less than 10,000 who are trying to accelerate a project that prioritizes project identification and implementation for small towns.

The plans may also address facilities, programs, policies, and design guidelines that encourage safe walking and bicycling.

NCDOT says that each proposal they receive will be divided and judged in their respective groups across the state.

Applications must be submitted electronically by 5 p.m. on March 25.
