30 Marines & sailors from 24th MEU injured in LCAC mishap off Florida coast

CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. (WITN) – There’s been another training accident involving Camp Lejeune’s 24th MEU.

The Navy says 30 Marines and sailors were injured in the mishap involving two landing craft air cushions from the USS Wasp and the USS New York off the coast of Jacksonville, Florida.

The accident happened Wednesday night.

Five sailors were initially taken to Savannah Memorial University Medical Center, and one of those remains hospitalized this afternoon. The others were treated for minor injuries aboard the Wasp and New York, the Navy said.

The 24th MEU was conducting a training exercise when the accident happened, according to the Navy.

The Navy says both LCACs were able to return to their ships after the accident while the two ships are again underway to continue their training.

Last month, a member of the 24th MEU was killed in a parachute accident during another training exercise.

Sgt. Colin Arslanbas died in an accident at Marine Corps Outlying Landing Field Atlantic in Carteret County.
