3-year-old identified in accidental Lenoir County fatal shooting

LENOIR COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – The identity of a 3-year-old boy killed in what deputies said was an accidental shooting has been released.

The Lenoir County Sheriff’s Office said that Clarence Byrd, IV, died Sunday after he accidentally shot himself with a handgun inside a home in the 5500 block of Murphy Road in Pink Hill.

Byrd was was taken to UNC Lenoir Health Care in Kinston after the initial shooting, and died around 11 a.m. Sunday.

There have been no charges filed in the case yet, but deputies have sent evidence to the SBI crime lab for processing.

“This is obviously a horrible and tragic situation and our heart goes out to the family and Pink Hill community,” Sheriff Jackie Rogers said. “Our thoughts and prayers are extended to all involved.”

This remains an active investigation by the Lenoir County Sheriff’s Office.
