NEW BERN, N.C. (WITN) – Excitement surrounds Breeze Airways becoming a part of the Coastal Carolina regional airport.

“I think the closest biggest airport that we usually direct fly out of Raleigh, so this is way more convenient,” a Coastal Carolina Regional Airport flyer, Koyal Gorge.

One-way flights for the airline will start as low as $49.

“This is the first time in this region of Eastern North Carolina that low-cost, what they like to call nice low-cost service has been available, so we’re ticking off a lot of first, and we’re happy about that,” said Andrew Shorter, the Coastal Carolina Regional Airport Director.

With two non-stop flights, one heading to Orlando, Florida, and the other to Hartford, Connecticut.

“There’s people that have transplanted from up in the northeast down here that have retired and want to go back up and visit family and friends and also people from here in New Bern down to Orlando and there’s people in Orlando that want to come up here,” said Breeze Airways Director, Bud Hafer.

Passengers will be flying on Airbus A220 aircraft with 137 seats, with the first flight taking off May 24th.

“What this stands to do for tourism for Craven County is nothing of transformative. Our economy is going to be impacted by markets and economies that we’ve never been able to reach before,” said Craven County Tourism Development Authority Executive Director Melissa Riggle.

The new airline has been in the works for about a year. The Craven 100 alliance, Craven County, and a grant from the federal government all helped with the incentive package for Breeze Airways.

The Coastal Carolina Regional Airport is also expanding its terminal, with hopes of attracting new airlines such as Breeze Airways along with new customers. The construction is expected to be done on June 27th.
